Pornography and sexually motivated murders of children

(Part one)

1) Stuart Hazell

Stuart Hazell has been jailed for a minimum of 38 years for killing his partner's granddaughter, Tia Sharp.
The 37-year-old had denied murder, but on the fifth day of his trial at the Old Bailey he changed his plea.
The court heard Hazell sexually assaulted and murdered Tia, 12, at her grandmother's house in south London.
Hazell hid Tia's body in her grandmother's loft in New Addington last August.

Despite four searches of the house, her body was not found until a week after she had been reported missing.
Hazell had claimed Tia died after falling down the stairs and breaking her neck, and he hid her body because he panicked.
The prosecution claimed he had a sexual attraction to the schoolgirl.
Jurors were shown an explicit image of a child, alleged to be Tia, which was said to have been taken in the early hours of 3 August 2012 when prosecutors say she died.
In a letter to his father, written while he was on remand in Belmarsh Prison, Hazell said the police were trying to make it sexual, a claim he denied.
However, jurors were told a sex aid with Tia's blood on it was found in the house.

Two memory devices were also found. Both contained explicit photographs - some of bestiality while others had teenage girls performing sex acts.
Hazell's phone had a record of internet searches which included terms such as "young girlies" and "schools girls XXX".
The last image on a memory card he owned was an explicit close-up photograph of a girl, said to have been Tia. It was taken when she was dead.
Hazell had also taken videos of Tia asleep and of her putting cream on her legs.
Mr Edis told the court: "Why is he taking these clips for? Did he have a sexual interest in young girls and Tia?"
The court also heard Hazell's semen was found in the room Tia used as a bedroom and on a pair of shorts Tia had worn.
The court had been told Hazell would claim Tia accidentally broke her neck falling down the stairs and that he panicked and hid the body in the attic.
A post-mortem examination did not show any evidence of a broken neck.
In an unexpected move, Stuart Hazell finally admitted murdering his step granddaughter, 12-year-old Tia Sharp.
After overwhelming evidence against him was presented in court last week, the 37-year-old abandoned his claim her death was an accident.

Stuart Hazell, the man standing trial for the murder of schoolgirl Tia Sharp, speaks to the press days before she was found dead.

2) Mark Bridger

Mark Bridger was an alcoholic paedophile who was infatuated with young girls and who lived out violent sexual fantasies through the internet.
On a chilly autumn evening last October, shortly after going to a parents’ evening at his daughter’s school which she attended alongside his victim April Jones, he took the trusting youngster into his Land Rover and made the evil fantasy a reality.
Mark Bridger

He murdered her and disposed of her body. So effective were his efforts at concealing the five year old’s remains– either by incinerating them in the wood-burner at his whitewashed cottage just a few miles from April’s home, or hiding her in the rugged hills and streams of the surrounding mid Wales countryside, that she was never found, despite the largest search operation ever mounted in British policing history.
His claims that she had died in a road traffic accident with his Land Rover Discovery and that fuelled by panic and alcohol he was unable to recall what he had done with her body were as risible as they were calculated. Bridger’s distinctive vehicle had been spotted by April’s friend on the night she went missing. Her blood was discovered throughout his home, mainly concentrated in front of the stove where fragments of a child’s skull were also recovered, along with a charred boning knife.
Although he was to prove every parent’s worst night mare, the powerful, six-footer with a snake tattooed on his arm, was a trusted figure on the Bryn y Gog estate where he had had relationships with at least two women and used to invite children over for sleepovers at his house.
April Jones

On the day of the killing, as he sent angry text messages to an ex-girlfriend and tried to arrange dates with a number of other women who he hit on at random, he spent time viewing his collection of child pornography.
The disturbing cache included 65 criminal-standard abuse images. Carefully categorised into separate folders were pictures of Soham murder victims Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman and British schoolgirl Caroline Dickinson who was raped and killed on a school trip to France in 1996.
The illegal pictures were kept away from holiday snaps in anonymous files including one marked “Z0” that contained obscene imagery of child abuse.
Another was marked “clothed” and the other bore the name of April’s 16-year-old half-sister who he had described as “beautiful” and an “up and coming model”. She had earlier refused a Facebook request to befriend the 47-year-old on the advice of her mother. Bridger meanwhile set his own Facebook settings to maximum and concealed his age.
The files contained photographs from the social networking site including a number of April which were downloaded just eight days before her murder. There were also pictures of a teenage daughter of one of Bridger’s friends and a number of other young girls from the town.
Among the search terms allegedly typed into his computer were “naked young five-year-old” whilst the computer picture library was found to contain pictures including one of a pregnant eight-year-old girl as well as sexually explicit cartoons.
Bridger insisted throughout that he was not a paedophile, claiming he was impotent as a result of anti-depressants and alcohol abuse – telling the court he drank up to 25 cans of cider and a bottle of wine a day.
He claimed he had been conducting research into his own teenage daughter’s physical development, or had been keeping the pictures to complain to publishers after happening across them during a search for SpongeBob Squarepants.

Mark Bridger had been watching an horrific rape scene from a slasher film “not long before” April Jones was murdered, it can be reported for the first time today.
When police searched Bridger's cottage they found that he had been watching a brutal rape scene from the 2009 re-make of the slasher film, The Last House on the Left. Bridger, a man who a hoarded hundreds of images of child pornography on his laptop, had recorded the scene where a young teenage girl is raped by the leader of a gang in front of his watching gangmates, some of whom help to hold the victim down while she is being attacked.
Police then discovered that the murderer recorded the rape scene for a second time when the film was repeated on a +1 channel an hour later.
When the scene was discussed in court, Bridger's own barrister Brendan Kelly QC described the scene as “distressing”.
Elwen Evans QC, for the prosecution, said given what happened in that room the discovery was “significant” and Bridger must have watched the scene “not long before” whatever happened to April took place.
She added: “This is not just the playing of a rape scene on television. That particular rape scene had been recorded twice. A deliberate action to capture the most distressing aspect.”

3) Roy Whiting

1995 conviction and imprisonment

On 4 March 1995, Whiting abducted and sexually assaulted an eight-year-old girl on the Langley Green estate in Crawley. He was arrested a few weeks later after a man who knew Whiting came forward after hearing that the abductor's car had been a red Ford Sierra. Three months later he admitted to the charges of abduction and indecent assault and was sentenced to four years in prison.

The maximum sentence would have been a life sentence for the crime, however his sentence was reduced because he had admitted the crime. A psychiatrist who assessed Whiting after his conviction said that he was likely to re-offend once he was released.

Roy Whiting

Release
Whiting was released from prison in November 1997, having serving 2 years and 5 months of his 4-year sentence, and was one of the first people in Britain to go on the sex offenders register. Whiting, knowing that he would not be welcome back in Crawley, moved some 25 miles (40 km) away to Littlehampton on the West Sussex coast where he rented a flat in St Augustine's Road. He lived at the flat for two years before moving into another flat in the same road.
On 2 July 2000 officers from Sussex Police visited his flat making inquiries into the disappearance of Sarah Payne.

Sarah Payne disappeared on 1 July 2000 from a cornfield near the home of her grandparents (Terence and Lesley Payne) in Kingston Gorse, West Sussex, England, where she had been playing with her brothers and sister (aged between five and 13 at the time). A nationwide search was under way within 48 hours, and Sarah's parents made numerous television appeals for her safe return. On 2 July 2000, officers from Sussex Police visited Whiting's flat making inquiries into the disappearance of Sarah Payne.
On 17 July, a girl's body in a field near Pulborough, some 15 miles (24 km) from the village of Kingston Gorse (near Littlehampton) where Sarah had disappeared. The following day, forensic science tests confirmed that the body was Sarah's, and the Sussex Police began a murder investigation.
Sarah Payne

On 21 July 2000, Whiting took to the road in a stolen Vauxhall Nova car and was pursued by police at speeds of up to 70mph before he crashed into a parked vehicle and was arrested on dangerous driving charges. He was remanded in custody until 27 September 2000, when he admitted taking the car and driving dangerously. He was jailed for 22 months.
When Whiting began his jail term for the car theft, detectives were able to carry out forensic tests on his F-registered white Fiat Ducato van, which he had bought on 23 June 2000. On 6 February 2001, following a police enquiry, Roy Whiting was charged with the murder of Sarah Payne. By 6 February 2001, Sussex Police had found enough evidence to charge Whiting and he appeared at Lewes Crown Court on charges of abduction and murder. He denied the charges and was remanded in custody to await trial.
On 12 December 2001, Whiting was convicted of the abduction and murder of Sarah Payne, and he was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. The trial judge, Richard Curtis, said that it was a rare case in which a life sentence should mean life.
The Sarah Payne murder, and many other cases of killings committed by serial sex offenders before and since, has led to continued calls from the public for the wider use of life sentences for child sex offenders.

At 2:17pm on 3 April 2010 Maden, who had an "obsessive interest" in pornography relating to paedophilia, rape and torture, telephoned Rigg's mother and asked for Tia to go to his home in Dalmain Close, Cheetham Hill in order to babysit his ten-year-old daughter. When she arrived at 3:00pm he drugged her with Olanzapine, an antipsychotic tranquilizer that he had been prescribed.
He then inflicted a "horrific catalogue of sexual injuries" on her before stabbing her and strangling her with a ligature made from a guitar string. At 3:45pm Maden telephoned the 999 emergency services number and said: "Hi, I would like to report a murder." He then gave his name and address and when asked by the operator what had happened he replied: "My niece has been murdered by me ... I have just finished killing her now." Asked why he had killed her he answered: "Because I felt like it" and terminated the call.
John Maden

Police officers from Greater Manchester Police arrived at the address two minutes later. Maden opened the door to the officers, who described him as "chillingly calm", and directed them upstairs. They found Rigg's body face-up on the floor of a spare bedroom, naked except for her socks, with the ligature still fastened around her neck and her hands tied behind her back with shoelaces. Next to the body were two knives, a broom handle and a sex toy, all of which were stained with blood.
An autopsy found that Rigg had suffered severe blood loss from her stab wounds and internal injuries but the primary cause of death was ligature strangulation.
Maden was tried at Manchester Crown Court on 4 October 2010. Prosecutor Gordon Cole QC told the court: "In the year or so prior to April this year, the defendant had developed what can properly be described as an obsessive interest in images and literature relating to paedophilia, rape and torture. He had an extensive library of such materials which included literature dealing with methods of killing."
Police had found "hundreds of extreme images of child abuse and violent pornography" on Maden's laptop, plus more material on his mobile phone in folders named "snuff", "snuff stories" and "brutal rape". Detective Chief Inspector David Warren, who led the investigation, revealed that Maden refused to explain his actions and had never shown remorse for the killing.
Tia Rigg

After pleading guilty to rape and murder, Maden was sentenced to life imprisonment with a recommendation that he should never be released. Passing sentence, Mr Justice Keith told him: "It is inescapable that Tia Rigg died because you decided to realise your fantasies about torturing and killing a young child. It is difficult to know how long Tia's ordeal lasted. The terror, the unimaginable pain you inflicted on her, the indignities you subjected her to while still alive. It was planned, it was premeditated and her agony must have been prolonged. This is one of those exceptional cases in which the only just punishment requires you to be imprisoned for the rest of your life."

Maden had become obsessed with violent porn he downloaded from the internet, the court heard.
Members of Tia's family sat in the public gallery, yards from Maden in the dock as Gordon Cole QC, prosecuting, opened the case. "In general terms this murder was premeditated," he said. "It was murder purely for his sexual gratification – it had a sexual motive. The facts reveal clearly features of torture, rape, physical abuse and the ultimate murder of a child.
"In the year or so prior to April this year, the defendant had developed what can properly be described as an obsessive interest in images and literature relating to paedophilia, rape and torture. He had an extensive library of such materials which included literature dealing with methods of killing."
Cole continued: "This material and the subsequent discovery of Tia reveals that this defendant was acting out a long-held fascination with rape, torture and abuse of children."

5) Stuart Campbell

A convicted sex offender with an obsession for teenage girls was jailed for life yesterday for the murder of Danielle Jones, his 15-year-old niece.
Stuart Campbell, 44, developed a fixation with Danielle and murdered her at his home in Essex after their relationship soured. He hid her body, which has never been recovered.
Danielle vanished while walking to catch a school bus near her home in East Tilbury, Essex, on 18 June last year. Yesterday, a jury at Chelmsford Crown Court found Campbell guilty of kidnapping and murdering her.
Stuart Campbell

After the conviction, police officers disclosed that the builder from Grays, Essex, a fitness fanatic, had a history of sex offending involving teenage girls. He was given a 12-month suspended prison term in 1989 after holding a girl aged 14 at his home and photographing her in a karate suit. Campbell was originally accused of abducting the girl and taking indecent pictures of her but the charge was dropped after he admitted to an offence of taking a child without lawful authority.

"Having kidnapped your niece, probably on the pretext of taking her to school, you took her to your home. There you murdered her and somehow disposed of her body without trace ... Your particular perverted interests focus on schoolgirls in the 14 to 15 age bracket. You are quite unable to control your impulses in this area."
Campbell had tricked teenagers into posing for him, falsely claiming he was a "glamour" model photographer, the jury had been told. Jurors heard from a number of young women who said Campbell had approached them in the street and sometimes persuaded them to return to his home and be photographed in various states of undress.
Since the start of the trial, six more women have contacted police to report that Campbell tried to photograph them when they were teenagers.
Danielle Jones
Police believe Campbell, whom they described as a "predator", killed her when she tried to break off the relationship. The crucial piece of evidence that secured Campbell's conviction was an analysis of mobile phone records that proved his handset and Danielle's had been in the same place near his home for about 30 hours after she had vanished. Police also say Campbell faked two text messages, which he sent from Danielle's phone to his after she disappeared.
A bag containing girl's underwear was found in Campbell's attic. Blood-stained stockings in the bag were matched with DNA from Campbell and Danielle.

Orlando Pownall, QC, prosecuting, said Mr Campbell was fascinated with pornographic websites with names such as Young Lolita Beauties and described as "100% free Japanese schoolgirl dirty pics".
He said when the police searched Mr Campbell's home they found a handwritten list of teenage websites.
Mr Pownall said: "This defendant had an abiding passion for girls in school uniform."

6) Ian Huntley

Ian Huntley was today given two life sentences after being convicted by an Old Bailey jury of murdering Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells.
Huntley's co-accused and former girlfriend, Maxine Carr, was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in jail after being found guilty of conspiring with Huntley to pervert the course of justice. She was cleared of two counts of assisting an offender in relation to the murder of the girls.
Ian Huntley

As he handed down the sentences, trial judge Mr Justice Moses told Huntley: "You murdered them both, you were the only person who knows how you murdered them ... in your lies and manipulation up to this very day you have increased the suffering you have caused the two families."
The jury of seven women and five men returned 11-1 majority decisions on the guilty verdicts after 17 hours of deliberations.
The jurors rejected 29-year-old Huntley's testimony that the schoolgirls died accidentally at his home, 5 College Close, in Soham on August 4 last year.
Huntley, the caretaker at Soham Village College at the time of the murders, told the court that the 10-year-olds went inside the college-owned three-bedroom detached house because Holly had a nosebleed.
He tried to convince the jury during more than two days in the witness box that Holly had slipped into the bath and drowned, and that he killed Jessica when he placed his hand over her mouth to silence her screams.
The jurors knew Huntley had once been charged with raping a teenager - a charge that was later dropped. But it emerged today that he had also been accused of indecently assaulting an 11-year-old and having sex with other schoolgirls in his native Grimsby, allegations that could not be revealed during the course of the trial.

Holly and Jessica

He found the ten-year-olds "too tempting" after they turned up on his doorstep, the prosecution alleged. First he took them on a "sightseeing tour" of his house, Richard Latham QC claimed. Then he drowned Holly and smothered Jessica when they were "no use any more" to him.
The suggestions were strongly and sometimes fiercely denied by the 29-year-old school caretaker, who insisted that Holly died by accident and Jessica suffocated as he tried to stifle her screams. At one stage he lost his temper and snapped angrily at the barrister.
But he admitted he never gave Jessica "the slightest chance" to live. And he agreed he had been "cold and ruthless" in dumping the bodies in a ditch before setting fire to them to conceal his tracks.
'Tailored his version'
The cover-up was likened to a military operation by the QC. Then, in the months before the trial, Huntley cold-bloodedly tailored his version of events to dodge around the evidence in a desperate attempt to get away with the killings, it was claimed.
The allegations were made as Huntley's account of what happened was challenged point by point for the first time in public, with the claim that he had told a succession of "bare-faced lies".
Holly's father and Jessica's parents sat silently towards the back of the court as the truth according to Ian Huntley was tested.
Later, Les and Sharon Chapman watched as he mimed for the court how he had killed their daughter. Then, in a matter-of-fact tone, he told in graphic detail how he got the girls out of the house.
He "bent their legs slightly" to cram them into his car boot and drove them to a woodland ditch. He took a can of petrol, bin bags to protect his trainers from the mud and a pair of rubber gloves.
There, he cut off their clothes because he was worried that fibres from his house would link him to their deaths if they did not burn properly.
Then he sprinkled petrol over their naked bodies and set fire to them, he said.

Violent pornography incites sexually motivated murders. (Part two)

27)Gary Heidnik

Was an American criminal who kidnapped women and kept them prisoner in his basement.

Beginning in November 1986, Heidnik, a former soldier who had made a small fortune on the stock market, abducted five women and held them in the basement of his house in Philadelphia. The captives were sexually abused, beaten and tortured in front of each other. When the first one died of her mistreatment, Heidnik dismembered her body. Heidnik ground it in a food-processor mixing it with dog food, which he then fed to the surviving victims.

Gary Heidnik

Heidnick had a problem dealing with the arms and legs so he put them in a freezer and marked them "dog food". Heidnik cooked her ribs in an oven and her head was boiled in a pot on the stove. A second woman bound in chains died when she was thrown in a filled bathtub and house current applied to those chains. She was electrocuted for not cooperating.
Heidnik would torture and sexually abuse the women individually or in groups. He dug a four-foot-deep pit that he would throw a "misbehaving" victim in. The pit would then be covered with plywood and heavy weights. The victims were also encouraged to inform on each other in return for better conditions.

Three victims found alive

One of the kidnapped women managed to escape on March 24, 1987. She had convinced Heidnik to let her go out, promising to bring back another captive for him, but instead she went straight to the authorities who secured a search warrant. Heidnik was arrested.

At his arraignment, Heidnik used a unique, and ultimately unintelligent, defense: he claimed that the women were already in the house when he moved in. Clearly, this argument failed to impress the judge.
The victims

Convicted of two counts of murder in 1988, Heidnik was sentenced to death. In January 1999 he attempted suicide with an overdose of prescribed thorazine. Heidnik was executed by lethal injection on July 6, 1999.

Over several days, police searched the house and yards detailing every piece of paper and material they found.  They excavated the front and back yards but did not find any further human remains.  In the house they found a closet full of pornographic magazines all of which featured black women. In 1975, Heidnik opens an account for the church under the name of Merrill Lynch . The first deposit was $ 1 500. Heidnik intelligently investing for 12 years in Playboy and finally collects 500,000 dollars. In 1986, the United Church of the Ministers of God is wealthy.

28) Edmund Kemper

Was born December 18, 1948, Santa Cruz, California. After his parents divorced when he was 9, Kemper lived with a domineering mother named Clarnell. She had strict standards and doled out brutal punishment when he failed to comply. She locked him in the basement for long periods of time. He hated toward his mother grew and fantasized about killing her. He was afraid of his peers, and had problems making friends. He enjoyed pretending he was in a gas chamber with his two sisters.
Edmund Kemper
Edmund buried the family's pet cat up to its neck; he then kept its severed head as a trophy. His mother replaced the cat. Edmund massacred the new cat with his machete and kept the pieces his bedroom closet where they were found by his mother. His own mother referred to him as a “weirdo.” After not being able to live get along in his mother's home and his father, Ed Jr. and stepmother's home, at age 13, he moved in with his paternal grandparents on a rural North Folk, California ranch. He didn't get along with his grandmother. His mother was concerned he may harm her ex-husband's parents. On August 27, 1964, at age 14, following an argument, he shot his grandmother in the back of her head while she sat at the kitchen table working on a children's book, then mutilated her with a kitchen knife. When his grandfather returned from the store, he shot him on the porch and left his body in the yard. After he phoned his mother he called the police to explain he just wanted to see how it felt to kill grandma.

Kemper was committed to Atascadero State Hospital. At the age of 21, after he convinced psychologists that he was sane, he was released in Santa Cruz, California, into his mother's custody against the advice of several Atascadero State Hospital psychiatrists. Still a virgin, Kemper used pornography and detective magazines for erotic stimulation. His mother who three failed marriages behind her was an administrative assistant at the University of California at Santa Cruz. She showed more interest and care towards college students than she did her son. With an IQ of 120 and imposing size of 6 feet 9 inches and almost 300 pounds, he had violent arguments with his mother and others. His mother put him down and blamed him for inability to find a boyfriend.

Kemper murdered six hitchhiking college co-eds, resembling his mother, in the Santa Cruz are of California, between May 1972 and February 1973, usually after a fight with his mother. Each murder was more bizarre and brutal. After taking them to desolate areas to stab, shoot or smother the victims, he brought the corpses back to his apartment to dissect and have sex with the parts before he ate them (so they could be part of him) and dumping their remains in the California hills.  Kemper then put both of the women's bodies in the trunk of his Ford Galaxie and returned to his apartment, being stopped on the way by a police officer for a broken taillight but managing not to be detected for his more serious offence. His roommate was not at home so he took the bodies into his apartment, there he took pornographic photographs of, and had sex with, the naked corpses while dismembering them, then putting the body parts into plastic bags – which he later abandoned near Loma Prieta Mountain Before disposing of Pesce's and Luchessa's severed heads in a ravine, Kemper engaged in fellatio with both of them.[2] In August, Mary Ann Pesce's skull was found up on Loma Prieta Mountain. An extensive search failed to turn up the rest of her remains or a trace of her companion.
He would later admit that he got a kick out of going to his psychiatric appointments with the head of a 15-year-old victim in the trunk.
Kemper claimed his mother bellittled and browbeat him continually. As he would watched her sleep he fantasizes about killing her. On an April Easter Sunday in 1973, Kemper crushed his mother's skull with a hammer,
Clarnell Strandberg- Kempers mother
decapitated her, masturbated in her mouth, ran her larnyx through the disposal, and cut off her right hand. Then he invited over her friend, a college employee and strangled her until her neck broke.
The victims

The following day drove east, while listening to the news of the crimes on the radio. Days later, in Pueblo, Colorado, Kemper was so disturbed that his mother's body had not been discovered that he confessed to the police by phone. (He had difficulty getting them to take his confession seriously.) After his arrest he gave a full confession to murder, necrophilia, and cannibalism. He pleaded not guilty due to insanity, but was found guilty on eight counts of murder. He requested the death penalty, but received life imprisonment with the possibility of parole but was denied parole in 1980. He is in Folsom Prison.

29)Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris

Lawrence Bittaker
Lawrence Sigmund Bittaker and Roy Lewis Norris are two American serial killers who together kidnapped, tortured, raped, and murdered five young women over a period of five months in California in 1979.

Bittaker and Norris hatched a plan to rape and kill local girls. Bittaker bought a 1977 GMC cargo van, which they came to call "Murder Mack", because it had no side windows in the back and a large passenger side sliding door. From February to June 1979, they gave their plan a test run. They drove along the Pacific Coast Highway, stopped at beaches, talked to girls and took their pictures. When the pair was arrested, police found close to 500 pictures among Bittaker's possessions.

On June 24, 1979, they claimed their first victim, 16-year-old Cindy Schaeffer. They picked her up near Redondo Beach, Norris forcing her into the van. He duct taped her mouth and bound her arms and legs. Bittaker drove the van to a fire road on San Gabriel Mountains out of sight of the highway. Both men raped the girl, and then Bittaker wrapped a straightened wire coat hanger around her neck. He tightened the wire with vise-grip pliers, strangling her to death. They wrapped her body in a plastic shower curtain and dumped it in a nearby canyon.

They picked up 18-year-old Andrea Hall hitch-hiking on July 8. Norris hid in the back of the van and Bittaker talked her into the van. After she had gotten in Bittaker offered her a drink from a cooler in the back. When she went to the cooler Norris jumped her, bound her arms and legs, and taped her mouth shut. They took her to the fire road and raped her several times. Bittaker dragged her from the van, and Norris left to get beer. When he returned, Hall was gone, and Bittaker was looking at Polaroid pictures of her. He had stabbed her with an ice pick in both ears and strangled her. He threw her body over a cliff.

On September 3, while driving near Hermosa Beach, the pair spotted two girls on a bus stop bench and offered them a ride. Jackie Gilliam, 15, and Leah Lamp, 13, accepted their offer. The girls became suspicious when Bittaker parked the van near a suburban tennis court. Lamp went for the back door and Norris hit her in the head with a bat. A short scuffle broke out, but with Bittaker's help Norris subdued the teens and bound them both. Bittaker then drove them to the fire road. They kept the girls alive for two days, raping and torturing them the whole time with a wire hanger and pliers. They even made an audio recording of the events. Eventually Bittaker stabbed Gilliam in both ears with an ice pick. When she didn't succumb to her injuries, both men took turns strangling her until she died. Bittaker then strangled Lamp while Norris hit her in the head with a sledgehammer seven times. They dumped the bodies over a cliff, the ice pick still in Gilliam's head.

They kidnapped Shirley Sanders on September 30, macing her and forcing her into the van. Both raped her, but she escaped. Police had showed her pictures of the men and she had identified the men as Lawrence and Roy.

They kidnapped 16-year-old Lynette Ledford on October 31, raping her and torturing her, while driving around Los Angeles instead of heading to their usual mountain spot. Bittaker stabbed the young girl several times and also tortured her with the pliers. During her torture, her screams and pleas were tape-recorded as Bittaker repeatedly beat her elbows with a sledgehammer, all the time demanding that she not stop screaming; he eventually strangled her with a wire hanger, using the pliers to twist a cinching loop around her throat. Instead of tossing her body over a cliff, they left it on a random lawn in Hermosa Beach to see the local reaction in the newspaper. The body was found the next day and caused quite a stir, being only days since the arrest of "Hillside Strangler" Angelo Buono.

"Scream, baby, scream"
The next month was nerve-wracking for Bittaker and Norris, worried that police might come for them at any moment. Bittaker found a new apartment in Burbank, while Norris remained with his mother. The killers began to relax as the weeks passed without any signs of police attention.
The pair went hunting again on Halloween night, deviating from their beach routine to prowl the residential streets of the Sunland and Tijunga district in the San Fernando Valley. They spotted 16-year-old Lynette Ledford hitchhiking and offered her a ride. She happily accepted--and within five minutes Norris wrestled her to Murder Mack’s floor.
Bittaker chose not to waste time driving to the mountains. They could rape and torture Ledford just as well, he reasoned, while they drove around the suburbs of Los Angeles. Norris took the driver’s seat, while Bittaker turned on the tape recorder and went to work on their captive. The tape records him slapping her, demanding, “Say something, girl!”

People Vs. Bittaker

People in the courtroom cried and/or ran into the lobby until the taped evidence was finished playing. Bittaker actually smiled while the tapes screamed.  Kay couldn’t help crying himself, telling the media later, “I just picture those girls … how alone they were when they died.”

When the Secret Service agents opened the trunk of DeBardeleben's car, they realized that the man they had apprehended as the Mall Passer was involved in crimes much more serious than counterfeiting.
However, the full extent of these crimes could not even begin to be comprehended until later, when agents in Washington, D.C., located a storage unit DeBardeleben had rented. Hopeful about locating DeBardeleben's printing plant, Agents Dennis Foos and Greg Mertz discovered evidence of crimes so heinous that thoughts of those crimes would haunt them for the rest of their lives.

Among the items located by the Secret Service were homemade audiotapes and photographs of sex-slayings, and a "death kit" containing handcuffs, shoelaces, chains, K-Y jelly, and worse – a woman's bloody underwear. Agent Foos knew that they had uncovered a criminal beyond the usual investigation capabilities of the Secret Service in investigating.

The Victims

The actual number of victims of DeBardeleben's will never be known. Unlike most criminals of his ilk, DeBardeleben refuses to acknowledge guilt or brag about any of his crimes. However, the Secret Service believe that he had been preying on women for eighteen years prior to his arrest. Considering that Ted Bundy, whose killing spree lasted only five years and resulted in the deaths of somewhere between 28 to 100 women, the number of women DeBardeleben is believed to have preyed on is staggering.

On September 3rd, 1978, in Delaware, DeBardeleben kidnapped Lucy Alexander. He repeatedly raped and sodomized her, forced her to perform fellatio on him, and then released her in an isolated area.

On February 4th, 1979, he kidnapped Elizabeth Mason, repeatedly choked her and banged her head on a wall until she lost consciousness, then left her for dead.

On June 1st, 1979, DeBardeleben kidnapped Laurie Jensen, took her to his home, and for 24 hours, raped and sodomized her, forced her to perform fellatio on him, forced her to masturbate herself using an oversized dildo for him, demanded that she call him "Daddy," and took pictures and audiotaped her throughout the entire ordeal. He then released her a few blocks from her home.
On November 1st, 1980, once again DeBardeleben found another victim, Dianne Overton. However, she managed to fight him off and escaped before he could harm her. After his failure to successfully victimize Overton, on November 12th, 1980, he kidnapped Maria Santini, stripped her and tied her hands and feet, took pictures of her in provocative poses, and then dumped her in the woods.
On April 27th, 1982, DeBardeleben kidnapped real estate agent Jean McPhaul. Her body was later found in an attic of a new home, lashed to a rafter by a ligature on her throat. She was fully clothed and had two puncture wounds to the heart.
In addition to victimizing numerous strangers, Secret Service agents were able to piece together DeBardeleben's personal life and discover five wives whom had all suffered similar horrors to the ones suffered by the women he kidnapped. Agents believe that DeBardeleben "practiced" his fantasies on his wives, prior to acting them out on the women he kidnapped. DeBardeleben's third wife, when interviewed in court for the cases against DeBardeleben, testified that to him, "all women were whores, sluts, tramps. They asked for what they got." (Michaud, 1994).
However, the object of DeBardeleben's most malicious thoughts and fantasies, was his fourth wife, Caryn. Among the evidence found by the Secret Service, was a detailed description titled "Script/Scenario" written by DeBardeleben describing conversations he would have with her while torturing her.
He wrote, "1 – Tell me all about the pain: necessary? Why? Describe it: details, more details… how does it feel – I don't know, it's not happening to me!! Convince me that you like it! 2 – Tell me how you feel humiliated, degraded… 3 – … Tell me how you like for me to bite your tits, slap your face, bite you in the ass, make loud surprise noises. 4 – Bite or cigar or whip at moment of ejaculation. 5 – Hair: pull as mane: say "arf," "bow wow," "neigh." 6 – Say original statements." Of Caryn, DeBardeleben wrote, "She never really loved me…" and "I don't want to kill Caryn – I want to punish her…" It was apparent to the agents that Caryn was the source of DeBardeleben's anger and hatred towards women.

DeBardeleben was tried and convicted based upon the forensic evidence, victims' testimony and witnesses' identification in six separate cases for counterfeiting, kidnapping and assault. He received a total sentencing of 375 years.

31)Fred and Rosemary West

Frederick Walter Stephen 'Fred' West (29 September 1941 – 1 January 1995), was an English serial killer.

Between 1967 and 1987, he and his wife Rosemary tortured, raped and murdered at least 12 young women and girls, many at the couple's homes. The majority of the murders occurred between May 1973 and September 1979 at their home in Gloucester.

Rosemary West also murdered Fred's stepdaughter (his first wife's biological daughter) Charmaine, while he was serving a prison sentence for theft.

Investigation, arrest and conviction

In May 1992, West filmed himself raping one of his other daughters, and twice again afterwards. She told friends at school what had happened. On 4 August one of the friends told her mother and she went to the police.

On 6 August 1992, the police decided to investigate, eventually leading to West being charged, with Rosemary as an accomplice, with rape. She was also charged with child cruelty and the remaining children were placed in foster care. The rape case against the Wests collapsed when the two main witnesses declined to testify at the court case on 7 June 1993. The police continued investigating the disappearance of their daughter Heather.
After taking statements from social workers about a joke about "Heather being buried under the patio" and the children themselves, they obtained a further search warrant in February 1994, allowing them to excavate the garden in search of Heather. They started searching the house and excavating the garden on 24 February 1994.
After West's arrest the following day, the police uncovered human bones. He confessed, retracted and then re-confessed to the murder of his daughter, denying that Rosemary was involved. Rosemary was not arrested until April 1994, initially on sex offences but later charged with murder. Further bodies were found and, on 4 March 1994, West admitted that he had carried out nine more murders, including those of his first wife and Ann McFall.
Fred and Rosemary West were brought before a magistrates' court in Gloucester on 30 June 1994; he was charged with 11 murders and she with 10. Immediately afterwards, Fred West was re-arrested on suspicion of murdering Ann McFall, whose body was found on 7 June 1994. On the evening of 3 July 1994, he was charged with her murder.
On 1 January 1995, Fred West hanged himself while on remand in his cell at Winson Green Prison, Birmingham. His funeral was held in Coventry on 29 March 1995. West was cremated with only three people present.
The evidence against Rosemary was circumstantial; unlike her husband, she did not confess. She was tried in October 1995 at Winchester Crown Court, found guilty of all 10 murders and sentenced to life imprisonment. The trial judge recommended that she should never be released and 18 months later the then serving Home Secretary Jack Straw agreed with this recommendation.
In October 1996, the Wests' house, along with the adjoining property, was demolished and the site made into a pathway. Every brick was crushed and every timber was burned to discourage souvenir hunters.

The victims

Their only known victim after 1979 was their daughter Heather, although the police believe the couple murdered more. There were no known murders in the years 1976–1977, 1980–1986 and 1988-1992. During questioning after being arrested, Fred West had confessed to murdering up to 30 people, but the police believed the pair may have killed only 13. As well as the 12 confirmed they believe West also killed 15-year-old Mary Bastholm in 1968, but to date no body has been found. West's son, Stephen, has said he firmly believed the missing Gloucester teenager was an early victim of his father, as Fred West had reportedly boasted of committing Miss Bastholme's murder while on remand in prison during 1994.
Although no forensic evidence linked Fred West to the murder of Anne McFall, the state of the body (missing finger and toe bones as was the case with the other bodies) and the dimensions of the grave site match aspects of West's modus operandi.

32) Mark Dixie

Mark Philip Dixie (born 24 September 1970) was born in Streatham.
Dixie's criminal record begins in 1986. Between then and 1990, he was found guilty of robbery, burglary, assaulting a police officer, indecent assault, indecent exposure and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Dixie lived in Australia from January 1993 until he was deported back to the UK in April 1999 after being fined for indecent exposure. He lived in London until moving to Spain in 2002. He moved back to England in 2003.

Dixie later started work as a chef at the Ye Old Six Bells in Horley, Surrey. He was arrested on 10 June 2006 in nearby Crawley, West Sussex, after being involved in a fight while watching an England vs Trinidad and Tobago World Cup football match. His DNA was taken and matched with that of Bowman's killer.

Dixie denied the murder. As part of his defence he claimed he had spent the night drinking and taking drugs, and had gone out to buy more cocaine. He claimed to have come across the body of Bowman, murdered, he said, by a third party, and had sex with her after she was killed.

Dixie's DNA matches that left at a sexual assault in 2001, where it is believed he masturbated in front of a woman in a telephone booth.

In October 2006, Dixie's DNA was sent to Western Australia to be tested against that of the DNA evidence in the Claremont serial killer case between 1996 and 1997, as it is believed he was in the area at the time of the killings, and may have committed them. At his trial for the murder of Bowman, an unnamed Thai woman gave evidence that Dixie had stabbed and raped her in Australia in June 1998 in Subiaco, Western Australia whilst Dixie was burgling her house; Dixie has yet to be formally charged with this attack, though a DNA sample from the woman's underwear has been matched to him.

A violent, sex-obsessed chef guilty of murdering aspiring model Sally Anne Bowman has been jailed for life and told he will serve a minimum of 34 years in prison. The partially naked body of the 18-year-old was left in a pool of blood in her driveway in Croydon, south London. She had been stabbed seven times and subjected to a gruesome sexual attack when she was dead or dying.

Mark Dixie had denied killing her, saying he stumbled across her prone body in front of her home in Croydon, south London and had sex with her, before realising she was dead. But the jury of seven women and five men found him guilty of the September 2005 murder in Blenheim Crescent, Croydon. During sentencing, Judge Gerald Gordon told him: "No words of mine about what you have done can remotely match the ones we have heard today from Mrs Bowman. "I shall only say that what you did that night was so awful and repulsive that I do not propose to repeat it.
Sally Anne Bowman
"Your consequent conduct shows you had not the slightest remorse for what you had done."
He was told he will serve a minimum of 34 years.
Dixie had a string of previous convictions for sex offences. Detectives believe he may even have killed while living in Australia in the 1990s and are appealing for other possible sex attack victims of his to come forward.

The killer of Sally Anne Bowman has admitted brutally raping a woman in Spain - a crime which another man has spent nearly 12 years in prison for.
Murderer Mark Dixie, 44, is serving life for killing 18-year-old Sally Anne in south London in 2005.
But the former pub chef is also suspected of attacking three women on the Costa del Sol where he was living before Sally Anne’s murder.
In a dramatic twist in the case last week, Dixie admitted raping one of the women in Spain, the Mail Online has revealed.
Dutchman Romano van der Dussen was wrongly jailed for the Spanish attacks - yet he remains behind bars to this day.

Dixie revealed his perverted lust in a torrent of letters BEFORE he was convicted of butchering 18-year-old Sally Anne Bowman.
The vile notes to beautician Elspeth Carrington, 25, expose a mind obsessed with filth - and devoid of remorse for his horrifying crime.

33) Drew Planten

Stephanie Bennett was murdered in 2002 in her apartment, which she shared with her roommate.

Stephanie Bennett
It took detectives three years to finally get the evidence to crack the case. The 35-year old man indicted was Drew Edward Planten, a shy and antisocial misfit who had a penchant for raping and killing women.
Drew Planten

It was the night of May 20 that would forever haunt Stephanie's family and friends. She was home alone, her roommates in Virginia. She had made broccoli for dinner and had spoken with Emily, Deanna and Walter by phone. Her body would be found in her bedroom the next day. Police quickly determined this was a rape-murder case. The killer apparently got into the apartment by removing a screen to an unlocked window, waited, and then jumped her. He bound her wrists and ankles, most probably with handcuffs, and gagged her. He wrapped a rope or wire around her throat, twisted it from behind and strangled her.

Stephanie had been sexually assaulted orally, anally and vaginally.
Drew Planten was arrested and charged with the murder of Stephanie Bennett. He never offered any explanation or any defense. He remained in a catatonic state, where he completely shut down, saying nothing and refused to walk into court.
Planten was never brought to justice. The mentally-disturbed man committed suicide by hanging himself in his jail cell before he could be brought to trial.
